Off-Season Storage Tips for Ski & Snowboard Gear

Your gear worked hard all winter. Now it needs the right off-season care. In New England, humidity, salt, and temperature swings can quietly damage skis, snowboards, boots, and apparel. A proper storage routine protects performance, extends lifespan, and ensures everything feels right on day one.

Built for Winter. Not for Storage.

Without the right prep, you risk:

  • Rusted edges
  • Dry, oxidized bases
  • Mold and odor buildup
  • Compromised fit and materials

1. Start Clean

  • Wipe down skis and snowboards to remove dirt and salt
  • Clean bindings and edges
  • Wash outerwear properly
  • Clear out boots and accessories

2. Eliminate All Moisture

  • Fully dry skis and snowboards
  • Remove and air out boot liners
  • Ensure gloves and soft goods are completely dry

3. Tune It Before You Store It

  • Repair base wear
  • Remove edge rust
  • Apply a thick coat of storage wax (leave it on)
  • Or...LET SKI HAUS DO IT FOR YOU! (see below)
  • 4. Store Smart

    Best:

    • Cool, dry, temperature-stable spaces
    • Interior closets or finished basements

    Avoid:

    • Damp basements
    • Garages with temperature swings
    • Hot attics

    5. Give Your Gear the Right Support

    • Store skis and boards flat or upright with support
    • Use racks or wall mounts when possible
    • Keep edges dry
    • Avoid stacking heavy items on top

    6. Don’t Overlook Boots & Apparel

    Boots:

    • Buckle lightly to hold shape
    • Store in a dry, breathable space

    Apparel:

    • Keep clean and fully dry
    • Avoid long-term compression

    7. Set Yourself Up for Opening Day

    • Note any needed repairs
    • Plan a pre-season tune
    • Store gear where it’s easy to access
